Crusaders Battle With Lander in Overtime

Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team was locked in a close battle with the Lander Bearcats in a South Atlantic Conference battle Saturday afternoon at Frank Hill Stadium.
 
For the second time this season, the Crusaders went to overtime but it was the Bearcats who got the game-winning goal late in the second overtime period for the 1-0 victory over The Abbey.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 0-5 overall, 0-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lander is 1-1 overall and in conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams were locked in a defensive battle as the Crusaders and Bearcats combined to take just one shot in the first 30 minutes.
  • Sarah Schumacher took the only shot of the afternoon for The Abbey off a penalty corner in the third quarter.
  • Chloe Parker made 10 saves in the contest for the Crusaders, all of which came in the second half and in overtime. She matched her season high of 10 saves from the contest against Shippensburg on September 2.
  • Parker currently has 211 saves on the season and recently became the second Crusader to reach 200 her saves for her career. The other is Paige Hinds with 239 for her career.
  • The Crusaders finished with two penalty corners on the afternoon.  
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders begin a three-game homestand next Friday against Converse at 2 p.m. at Field Day Park.
  • Belmont Abbey will face Mount Olive and Lincoln Memorial to close out the home slate in September.
