NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey opened the 2023 women's volleyball season Friday with a pair of matches at the Newberry College Invitational. The Crusaders drew the host Wolves in their first match, falling by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) count, then dropped a second 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-15) decision later in the evening.
THE NEWBERRY MATCH
- Senior Cameron Young and freshman Tyler Case each tallied seven kills to lead the offensive effort. Young had just one error in 15 chances for a .400 hitting percentage. She also had the only ace for the Crusaders.
- Bailey Teter also hit .400 with five kills against one error in 10 attempts.
- Ella Schellenberg disheore three blocks, all assists, the most of anyone on the team.
- Ellie Roberts hit a team-high .750 with three kills in four swings.
- Belmont Abbey hit .117 (32k-20e-103a) in the contest.
THE ARKANSAS-FORT SMITH MATCH
- Case had a team-best six kills with Young and Wilson adding three each. Young also had the Crusaders only block, a solo.
- Schellenberg dished out 13 assist, while Case led the defensive effort with seven digs.
- Ellie Foco added five digs, while Alyssa Adkins tallied the only ace.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey plays two more matches at Newberry tomorrow.
- The Crusaders face Lander in the first match of the day at 10 a.m., then return for a 5 p.m. clash with Auburn-Montgomery.
