Sniffen’s Gem Helps Abbey Baseball Earn Win over Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team got off to a good start in a pivotal three-game Conference Carolinas series against Emmanuel with a 12-1 win over the Lions Friday evening at Tom Carrey Field.

Starting pitcher Alex Sniffen led the way for the Crusaders with his strongest start of the season by striking out 10 batters over seven shutout innings. He also allowed just five hits and two walks in the win. He reached double-digit strikeouts for the second time in his career after doing so in the Southeast Regional last year against Young Harris.

Offensively, The Abbey got off to a fast start with eight runs over the first four innings, including a four-run frame in the fourth. Patrick Taylor had three hits while Garrett Browder drove in four runs to lead the charge for the Crusaders.

Belmont Abbey improved to 31-13 overall, 12-13 in the conference. Emmanuel is 24-19 overall and 12-12 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ben Ferguson got the scoring started for Belmont Abbey with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to drive in Connor Powell.
  • The Crusaders added three runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Taylor.
  • Sniffen only allowed one extra-base hit to the Lions in his start.
  • Belmont Abbey capitalized on two Lions errors in the fourth inning as Powell, Ferguson, Browder and Carter DuHaime all drove in runs.
  • Another Emmanuel error in the fifth allowed Todd Velotta to score and make it 9-0 for The Abbey.
  • Browder capped the scoring for Belmont Abbey with a three-run home run in the seventh inning. He became the second Crusader to reach 10 home runs this season after DuHaime did so earlier this season.
  • Layton Dickerson and Andrew Glauber closed the game out by pitching the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
  • The Crusaders reached 15 hits for the second straight game.

  • The series concludes with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
  • It will be Belmont Abbey's final two road games of the season.
  • The Crusaders will play the final four home games at Abbey Yard: a single game against Lenoir-Rhyne Monday and a three-game series against King next weekend.
