Abbey Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team closed out its final road trip of the regular season by sweeping a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against Emmanuel Saturday afternoon at Tom Carrey Field.
 
The Crusaders came away with a 12-2 victory in the first game before completing the three-game weekend sweep with a 5-0 shutout over the Lions in the second game.
 
The Abbey combined for 26 hits in the two games, including a season-high 17 in the opener. The two starting pitchers also put together quality starts en route to the pair of Crusader victories.  Connor Powell had five hits on the day as well for the Crusaders.
 
Belmont Abbey improves to 33-13 overall and 14-13 in the conference. Emmanuel is 24-21 overall, 12-14 in league play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • The Crusaders took the early lead with a sacrifice fly by Browder in the top of the first inning.
  • Wilson worked his way out of a jam in the second inning by catching a runner trying to steal home.
  • Belmont Abbey began to break it open in the third starting with a leadoff home run from Ben Ferguson.
  • Later in the inning, Todd Velotta drove in two runs with an RBI double and Joe Whitaker extended the lead to 6-0 scoring off a wild pitch.
  • The Lions hit consecutive home runs in the bottom of the inning but the Crusaders responded with two home runs in the fourth by Browder and Caleb Burr.
  • Burr hit a two-run home run in the fourth and added another home run in the sixth.
  • Patrick Taylor and Ferguson also added RBI doubles in the fifth.
  • Ethan Wilson finished with six strikeouts in his first career complete game and only allowed two walks.
 
GAME 2
  • After a combined six home runs in the first game, Grant Lohmeier and Emmanuel pitcher Simon Boggie did not allow a run through the first four innings.
  • The Crusaders broke the deadlock in the fifth when Browder added an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Connor Tucker added a two-run single after an Emmanuel pitching change to extend The Abbey lead to 3-0.
  • Tucker added another RBI single in the seventh while Patrick Taylor added an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
  • Lohmeier only allowed four hits and struck out five in scoreless innings while Drew Stegura pitched the final three scoreless innings to earn the save. He also struck out five in relief for the Crusaders.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders are at home for the final week of the regular season starting Monday with a contest against No. 20 Lenoir-Rhyne at 5 p.m. at Abbey Yard.
  • It is the first meeting since the season opener on February 1, a 7-2 win for The Abbey in Hickory.
  • Belmont Abbey closes Conference Carolinas play with a three-game series against King starting at 5 p.m. Friday.
