BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team scored 11 runs over the final three innings of play and that proved to be the difference as the Crusaders defeated Anderson 18-9 Tuesday evening at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Trojans rallied for eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined. Belmont Abbey responded with six runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run home run from
Garrett Browder, and never gave up the lead after that.
Belmont Abbey improved to 30-13 overall and remains a perfect 17-0 in nonconference play this season. Anderson drops to 22-23 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey got on the board in the first inning with DuHaime drawing a walk with the bases loaded for the first run of the game.
- The Crusaders added three runs in the bottom of the third with DuHaime driving in Ben Ferguson with an RBI groundout followed by an two-run single by Caleb Burr.
- Belmont Abbey made it 6-0 in the fourth with an RBI double from Patrick Taylor and an RBI single from Browder.
- After the Trojans hit a grand slam in the fifth to make it 6-4, Burr hit a solo home run to make it 7-4.
- Anderson took its first lead at 8-7 in the sixth but an RBI single by Ferguson tied the game before Browder's home run gave the Crusaders the lead. The Abbey scored two more runs in the frame after that and led 13-8 after six inning.
- The Trojans made it 13-9 in the seventh before the Crusaders put the game away with a five-spot in the eighth highlighted by a two-run double from Todd Velotta and a two-run home run from Connor Powell.
- Powell and Browder finished with three hits each.
- Josh Mruk earned his first career win on the mound for Belmont Abbey while Drew Stegura struck out four in a scoreless final two innings.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
- The Belmont Abbey baseball team was ranked No. 9 in the latest Southeast regional rankings released by the NCBWA.
- The NCAA is set to unveil its first set of regional rankings Wednesday. The teams under consideration will be initially listed in alphabetical order before being ranked 1 through 10 the following week.

- Belmont Abbey plays its final road games of the regular season with a three-game Conference Carolinas series at Emmanuel starting at 5 p.m. Friday in Franklin Springs, Ga.
