BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey overcame a sluggish first quarter with an eight-goal outburst in the second to open a 9-2 advantage, then held on for a 17-7 victory over Chowan in Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Senior-Day victory -- in which six members of the senior class were honored pregame -- was the sixth in a row for the Crusaders and guaranteed at least a share of the league title.
The Abbey, which improved to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in league play, can claim the title outright with a victory at Lees-McRae in the regular-season finals on Thursday. The Hawks fall to 4-9, 2-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Davis McCulley finished the contest with seven points on five goals and two assists. Four others tallied three points with 11 different Crusaders finding the net at least once.
- Tre Childers posted two goals and an assist, while Riley Arsenault, Matthew Wyatt and Tim Palmer each had a goals and two helpers.
- After opening the game with the first goal, Chowan responded with the next two to hold a 2-1 advantage after 15 minutes.
- The Crusaders began the dominant second period with a goal from Riley Arsenault, followed by tallies by Wyatt, Childers, McCulley, Tyler Bunes, Harry Maloney, and Richie Timothee. McCulley capped the second with another strike with just over two minutes to play.
- Jeremy Mahoney, Michael Canavan, and Caleb Mulcahy added goals during the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
- Mulcahy won 23 of 28 faceoffs during the contest, gaining 15 ground balls.
- Before the game, Will Duffy, Eric Thomas, James Bucher, Thomas Sullivan, Pat Doering, Brad Mackie and Team Impact participant Gabe Clifford were honored.
