DuHaime’s Two-Home Run Day Helps Abbey Baseball Split With NGU

BELMONT, N.C. – Carter DuHaime hit two home runs for the Belmont Abbey baseball team in the opening game of a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against North Greenville Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
 
The home runs were enough to lift The Abbey to a 9-3 win before dropping an 11-1 series finale to NGU. DuHaime finished with five runs batted in and now has a team-best 10 home runs on the season. Garrett Browder also homered in the opener and finished with four hits on the day.
 
The results move Belmont Abbey to 29-13 overall, 11-13 in the conference. North Greenville is 38-6 overall and 23-4 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Belmont Abbey got off to a good start thanks to a two-run home run from Browder in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Gianni Smith retired the first six NGU batters he faced on the mound.
  • The best inning of the day for The Abbey came in the fourth highlighted by the first DuHaime home run along with an RBI single by Connor Tucker and an RBI double by Connor Powell.
  • DuHaime hit his second home run the next inning to give Belmont Abbey a 9-1 lead.
  • Myles Hedgecock earned the win by pitching 2.1 scoreless innings.
  • Powell and Joe Whitaker also had two hits in the opener.
 
GAME 2
  • Both teams got on the board in the second inning with NGU hitting a home run while Caleb Burr scored on an error after a Powell infield single.
  • North Greenville added one run each in the third and fifth inning before breaking the game open with an eight-run sixth inning.
  • Ethan Wilson struck out six batters in 4.1 innings of work.
  • Josh Mruk pitched the final two scoreless innings of the game for Belmont Abbey.
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders host Anderson University in a nonconference matchup at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Abbey Yard.
  • Belmont Abbey has two more Conference Carolinas series left in the regular season: at Emmanuel next weekend and at home against King April 28-29 to close the regular season.
