BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned home to Abbey Yard to open a pivotal three-game Conference Carolinas series against defending national champion North Greenville Friday evening.
The Abbey offense was held in check to just three hits as NGU used a fast start to pull away for a 17-2 victory. The start of the game was delayed by an hour and 11 minutes due to inclement weather.
Belmont Abbey fell to 28-12 overall, 10-12 in Conference Carolinas play. North Greenville improved to 37-5 overall, 22-3 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- North Greenville got off to a fast start by putting up four runs in the inning on back-to-back home runs.
- NGU added consecutive home runs in the fourth to make it 6-0 before breaking the game open with six runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth inning.
- Belmont Abbey got on the board with pinch hitter Scotty Reeves drawing a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning followed by Carter Bass scoring on a wild pitch.
- David Dobson made his first appearance of the season on the mound in the ninth inning for Belmont Abbey.
- Alex Sniffen recorded eight strikeouts in his start for the Crusaders.
- Patrick Taylor, Ben Ferguson and Connor Powell all recorded hits for The Abbey.
