GREENWOOD, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team used a late-inning offensive surge to pull away for a 16-8 victory over Lander Tuesday evening at Dolny Stadium.
The Crusaders trailed 8-6 going into the top of the seventh inning before scoring 10 runs over the final three innings, including five in the ninth to break the game open.It is the third time in the last six games that the team has scored 16 runs in a game.
Belmont Abbey extends its winning streak to four games and are now 15-5 on the season. Lander falls to 6-13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got on the board quickly with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
- Connor Tucker drove in the first of his four runs on a sacrifice fly that was followed by an RBI on a fielder's choice by Jackson Risk.
- Belmont Abbey went up 3-1 when Tucker scored on a single by Garrett Browder and both runners advanced on an error.
- After falling behind 4-3, Joey Humphrey tied the game scoring from first base on a stolen base followed immediately by a fielding error.
- Tucker's two-out, two-run single in the same inning gave The Abbey a 6-4 lead.
- After falling behind 8-6, the Crusaders took the lead for good with a four-run seventh inning.
- Browder started the scoring with an RBI single followed later by consecutive bases-loaded walks drawn by Todd Velotta and Connor Powell.
- Patrick Taylor capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
- Joe Whitaker drove in four of the final six runs of the game as a pinch hitter for Belmont Abbey with an RBI single in the eighth and a bases-clearing triple in the ninth.
- Tucker and Humphrey both had RBI singles to bookend a five-run ninth inning.
- Ben Ferguson finished with a pair of hits as well in the contest.
- Belmont Abbey was able to take advantage of extra opportunities by drawing nine walks and getting hit by a pitch seven times.
- Myles Hedgecock picked up his first win as a Crusader by pitching 2.2 innings of relief and allowing just three hits.
- Jake Craddock retired the side in the ninth inning to close the game.
