WILSON, N.C. – Ben Ferguson had three hits, including his team-leading fifth home run, for Belmont Abbey baseball as it opened up a three-game Conference Carolinas series against Barton Friday at Wilson Field.
However, it was the Bulldogs who came away with a 7-4 victory over the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey is now 15-6 overall, 4-6 in league play. Barton moves to 9-9, 5-4 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders had three hits in the top of the first inning but it was a sacrifice fly from Connor Tucker that gave Belmont Abbey a 1-0 lead.
- The Bulldogs pulled even in the bottom of the second inning before Ferguson's fifth home run of the season gave The Abbey a 2-1 lead in the third.
- Barton extended the lead to 5-2 later in the sixth before the Crusaders attempted to rally back with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning.
- The Crusaders took advantage of a pair of errors by the Bulldogs with Carter DuHaime scoring on an error and Ferguson scoring on a flyout to center field by Garrett Browder.
- Barton added two runs in the bottom of the inning for the final scoreline.
- Belmont Abbey had runners on first and second base with two outs in the ninth but Barton was able to hold off the final rally.
