Abbey Baseball Finishes off Saturday Sweep of Southern Wesleyan

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a series sweep of Southern Wesleyan with a pair of wins in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
 
The Crusaders earned a 5-3 victory in Game 1 before breaking the game open for a 16-5 victory  in the second game of the doubleheader.
 
The series sweep puts The Abbey with a 14-5 overall record, 4-5 in Conference Carolinas. Southern Wesleyan finishes the weekend at 7-11 overall, 3-3 in the league.
 
GAME 1
  • After a scoreless first two and a half innings, the Crusaders got on the board with a pair of two-out runs.
  • The first run came with an RBI single from Connor Powell while Garrett Browder was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a second run.
  • The Warriors responded with three runs in the fourth but The Abbey added three runs in the fifth to capture the lead for good.
  • Belmont Abbey took advantage of a pair of Southern Wesleyan miscues with Browder drawing a walk with the bases loaded and Carter DuHaime reaching after being hit by a pitch.
  • The final run of the inning came via an RBI groundout by Joe Whitaker.
  • Alex Sniffen struck out seven batters in 5.2 innings and earned the win.
  • Jake Craddock recorded the final four outs to get the save.
 
GAME 2
  • Nic Aehlert led the way on the mound for The Abbey by taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
  • He retired the first seven batters he faced and only allowed two base runners during his time on the mound. He finished with allowing just one hit and striking out five over seven innings.
  • The Crusaders' bats came to life to begin the second game scoring seven runs in the first two innings of the contest.
  • Belmont Abbey hit four home runs in the second game of the doubleheader: a three-run home run from DuHaime in the second, a two-run shot from Ben Ferguson in the fourth, a solo home run from Taylor in the fifth and a two-run home run from Joey Humphrey in the sixth.
  • Taylor and Ferguson had three hits each for the Crusaders as part of the 16 hits that Belmont Abbey had. That is tied for the most in a game this season.
  • Brady Emerson and Will Hudler had their first runs batted in of the season while AJ Jaworoski made his first appearance of the season for The Abbey.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders play their next five games away from Abbey Yard.
