Abbey Defeats Embry-Riddle In Final Game Before Conference Opener

BELMONT, N.C. – Matthew Wyatt scored a season-high four goals and added an assist while Thomas Sullivan had 18 saves as Belmont Abbey defeated Embry-Riddle 14-10 Wednesday afternoon in a nonconference men's lacrosse game at Alumni Field.
 
The Crusaders ended a two-game slide with a victory in its final game before beginning Conference Carolinas play this weekend. The Eagles got within a goal in the fourth quarter before The Abbey scored the final three goals to close the game out.
 
Belmont Abbey moved to 4-3 overall while Embry-Riddle is now 4-4.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wyatt got the Crusaders on the board with his goal with 10:24 left in the opening quarter on an assist from Tim Palmer.
  • Quinn Smith scored his second goal of the season in the opening quarter as the Crusaders and Eagles were tied at 2-2 after the first 15 minute.
  • Riley Arsenault scored both of his goals in the second quarter, one of which was assisted from Wyatt who also scored in the quarter.
  • Sebastian Parrish scored his first career goal with eight minutes left before halftime.
  • After the Eagles got within 6-5 early in the third quarter, the Crusaders scored four straight goals to take its largest lead of the game at 10-5.
  • Belmont Abbey took a 10-6 lead in the fourth quarter but Embry Riddle scored four of the first five goals of the quarter to get within 11-10. The final goal of that stretch came from Trent McCauley.
  • Jacob Power was involved in the final three goals for the Crusaders recording two assists on goals from Mikey Sweigart and scored the final goal with 4:14 remaining. Sweigart finished with three goals.
  • McCauley's goal and Sweigart's two goals in the fourth quarter came in the span of 28 seconds.
  • Davis McCulley added a goal and two assists in the win.
  • The Abbey finished with 34 ground balls for the game led by nine from Caleb Mulcahy.
  • The Crusaders took a season-high 46 shots for the game.
