Second-Quarter Surge Lifts Men's Lacrosse to 14-6 Win at North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Matthew Wyatt and Mikey Sweigart combined for five first-half goals and three others struck during a four-goal second-quarter, leading Belmont Abbey to a 14-6 victory in Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The contest was the league opener for both teams.

The Abbey is now 5-3, 1-0, while North Greenville falls to 3-6, 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wyatt finished the contest with five goals and one assists for six points, while Davis McCulley, Tre Childers, Jeremy Mahoney and Sweigart all posted three points.
  • After NGU took a 1-0 lead 46 seconds into the contest, The Abbey scored three straight over the next six minutes. Sweigart answered the first goal 52 seconds later before Wyatt struck twice in just under two minutes -- with 9:08 and 7:16 to play.
  • The hosts tied the score at 3-3, but Wyatt found the net for a third time in the period with with just 33 seconds remaining for the 4-3 edge.
  • In the second quarter, Sweigart, Mahoney, Childers and McCulley all scored, while Thomas Sullivan made seven saves in the 15 minutes as the lead swelled to 8-3.
  • The Abbey used a 5-2 advantage in the third quarter, then played even in the fourth (1-1) for the victory.
  • Sullivan finished the contest with 18 saves and just six goals allowed in his 60 minutes of action.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey continues to play on the road next Saturday with a trip to Barton.
  • The Crusaders' remaining five games are all in league play as they seek a third straight regular-season title (shared or outright).
