BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned home and scored a season-high 14 runs en route to a 14-9 win over Mars Hill Tuesday at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders took advantage of extra opportunities at bat, drawing 12 walks and with nine batters reaching base after being hit by a pitch.
Nic Aehlert earned his second win of the season by allowing one run and four hits while striking out six while
Jackson Risk had two of the seven Abbey hits on the evening.
The Crusaders moved to 10-3 on the season while the Lions are now 2-11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mars Hill got the opening run of the game in the top of the first inning with an RBI single.
- The Crusaders took the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Jack Boyles drove in the first run with a single while Connor Powell had a sacrifice fly to score Risk.
- Belmont Abbey's biggest inning came in the third and scored six runs without a hit. The Crusaders drew five walks and two batters reached after being hit by a pitch.
- The Crusaders' first run came when Ben Ferguson scored on a fielding error by the Lions with Caleb Burr at bat.
- Jack Boyles and Connor Powell both drew bases-loaded walks to drive in runs while Patrick Taylor was hit by a pitch to drive in another run. Taylor was hit five times in the game
- The next run came via a fielder's choice from Joe Whitaker with the last run coming when Powell scored on a wild pitch.
- Ferguson drew two of his four walks in the third inning.
- Belmont Abbey extended the lead to 12-1 after scoring two runs each in the fifth and sixth inning. Joey Humphrey drove in two runs on an RBI single in the fifth while Ferguson drove in two runs with a two-run double in the sixth.
- Mars Hill responded with a seven-run seventh inning that included a grand slam.
- Jake Craddock came in and put together a strong 1.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts.
- Belmont Abbey scored its last two runs in the bottom of the inning when Justin Herrera and Taylor were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in consecutive plate appearances.
REGIONAL RANKING
- The Belmont Abbey baseball team is ranked No. 8 in the latest NCBWA Southeast Regional Rankings that was released earlier on Tuesday.
- The national poll is set to be released Wednesday.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders head back on the road for the second straight weekend to begin a three-game Conference Carolinas series at Erskine.
