DUE WEST, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball went on the road for conference play for the second straight week and opened a three-game series at Erskine Friday.
The Crusaders scored the first two runs of the game but a big fifth-inning proved pivotal as the Flying Fleet came away with a 7-6 win at Grier Field.
The Crusaders are 10-4 overall, 0-4 in the league. The Flying Fleet are 10-3 overall, 2-1 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got on the board in the top of the second inning when Connor Tucker scored on a balk.
- He got to third base after a one-out single by Garrett Browder. Browder led The Abbey with three hits on the day.
- Belmont Abbey got out of a jam in the bottom of the inning when Erskine lined into a double play with runners on second and third.
- The Crusaders added a second run with a sacrifice fly by Ben Ferguson.
- The Flying Fleet got on the board with a run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
- The Abbey cut the deficit with an RBI single by Jack Boyles in the sixth to score Browder.
- Carter DuHaime accounted for the final three runs of the game for the Crusaders, an RBI single in the top of the seventh and a two-run home run in the ninth.
- The Fleet scored runs in the seventh and eighth to extend the lead and secure the win.
- Patrick Taylor and Connor Powell had two hits each for the Crusaders.
