PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team concluded its three-game series against UNC Pembroke with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
Belmont Abbey ended up dropping both games of the twin bill, falling 12-0 in Game 1 before suffering a 9-6 setback in Game 2.
The results drop the Crusaders to 9-3 overall, 0-3 in Conference Carolinas play. UNC Pembroke is 9-0, 3-0 in the league.
GAME 1
- Joe Whitaker and Patrick Taylor recorded a hit each in the opening game of the doubleheader.
- UNC Pembroke scored in each of the first three innings before breaking the game open with a seven-run fifth inning.
- A number of Crusaders made their first appearances this season for The Abbey.
- Brady Emerson, Justin Herrera and Patrick Fink as pinch hitters or defensive replacements while Layton Dickerson made his first appearance on the mound.
GAME 2
- After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Belmont Abbey's best inning of the day came in the top of the third inning with five runs plated.
- The inning was highlighted by a pair of triples from Ben Ferguson and Jack Boyles. The Crusaders also took advantage of a pair of fielding errors by the Braves.
- Tucker scored two batters later with an RBI single from Joey Humphrey.
- Garrett Browder extended the Crusaders' lead to 6-2 in the fifth with a solo home run.
- UNC Pembroke rallied in the eighth inning with five runs that was capped off by a three-run home run to break a 6-6 tie.
- Belmont Abbey was able to load the bases with two outs in the ninth before the Braves closed the game out.
