PEMBROKE, N.C. – The No. 14 Belmont Abbey baseball team went on the road to open Conference Carolinas play at No. 18 UNC Pembroke Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The Crusaders fell behind and later rallied but ultimately fell 9-8 to the Braves in a back-and-forth battle.
Belmont Abbey trailed 7-0 entering the seventh inning before charging back with a six-run frame to get back in the game.
Patrick Taylor hit his third career home run in the eighth to give the Abbey the lead. The Braves answered with two in the bottom half of the inning to re-capture the lead and earn the win.
Belmont Abbey suffers its first defeat of the season and is now 9-1 overall, 0-1 in Conference Carolinas. UNC Pembroke is now 7-0, 1-0 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Carter DuHaime recorded the Crusaders' first hit with a one-out single in the top of the second inning. He led the team with three hits on the night.
- Patrick Taylor also reached base safely three times after being hit by a pitch in two separate plate appearances.
- UNC Pembroke scored two runs in the first and one in the fifth before a four-run sixth inning helped the Braves extend their lead.
- The Crusaders took advantage of three separate errors by the Braves to climb their way back into the game.
- Joe Whitaker started the rally by reaching on a fielding error. That was followed by a Joey Humphrey single and he later scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Connor Powell three batters later.
- Taylor drove in a run after being hit by a pitch in the next plate appearance.
- Belmont Abbey got within 7-6 thanks to three straight singles from Ben Ferguson, Connor Tucker and DuHaime. DuHaime's single scored two runs.
- Carter Bass made his first appearance in a Belmont Abbey uniform as a defensive substitution in the seventh inning. He also made his first at-bat in the eighth.
- Taylor's home run came with two outs and drove in Garrett Browder, who led off the inning reaching base after being hit by a pitch.
- The Braves answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
