Abbey Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Trojans

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team maintained its unblemished record in the early part of the season as the Crusaders earned a sweep over Trevecca Nazarene Friday at Abbey Yard.

The Abbey took the opener 7-2 before rallying back to earn a 5-4 win in the second game.

The Crusaders improved to 7-0 on the season while the Trojans fell to 0-2 in their opening day of play. Friday's doubleheader marked the first contests of the season at Abbey Yard.

THE OPENER
  • Connor Powell led the offensive attack, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Five other players each had a hit.
  • Belmont Abbey capitalized on a wild pitch in the first and a passed ball to plate single runs in each of the first two innings.
  • After Trevecca Nazarene cut the lead to 3-2 on a two-run home run in the top of the fourth, the Crusaders broke the game open with four runs in their half of the frame. Connor Powell delivered a one-out single to left-center to bring home Boyles. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Connor Tucker doubled to right to push the advantage to 6-2. An RBI groundout by Carter Duhaime later in the inning made the score 7-2.
  • Gianni Smith (2-0) allowed just four hits in seven complete innings to earn the win. He struck out five against two walks.
  • Frankie Barrett pitched the final two innings, striking out five of the eight batters he faced -- including all three in the ninth.

THE NIGHTCAP
  • Trevecca Nazarene scored the first four runs of the contest, including a home run on the first pitch of the game.
  • The Crusaders cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-run home to center field by Jackson Risk.
  • Ethan Wilson entered the game in relief of Nic Aehlert in the third inning and finished with 10 strikeouts, including striking out the side in the fourth inning. The 10 K's are a new career-best for the sophomore.
  • Belmont Abbey took advantage of a fielding error thanks to an RBI single by Carter DuHaime.
  • The Crusaders capitalized on more defensive miscues from the Trojans and went ahead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Whitaker.
  • The play scored Jack Boyles, who led off the inning with a walk and Connor Powell came around to score on a Trojans throwing error.
  • Wilson got out of a jam in the sixth inning by forcing an inning-ending double play with runners on the corners. He retired the Trojans in order to close out the game. He allowed just four hits and a walk in his five innings of relief.
