Crusaders Close Opening Weekend With Second Straight Victory

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team closed out the opening weekend of the season with a second straight win as the Crusaders defeated Emory & Henry 76-61 Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center.
 
The Abbey moved to 2-0 on the season and used a 22-point fourth quarter to pull away for the victory. Emory & Henry is now 1-1 following Saturday's contest.
 
Abigail Crain led all scorers with 19 points while Peyton Nation and Janiah Shular each had 14 points for the Crusaders. Additionally, Nation finished with nine rebounds (one shy of a double-double) and two steals while Shular had five assists, four steals and a blocked shot.
 
Hannah Spainhour had 14 points to lead the Wasps while Gracyn Hall and Grace Glance each had 11.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After both teams went back and forth early, the Crusaders closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to lead 16-12 after the first quarter.
  • Belmont Abbey also closed the first half on a 9-0 run to take an 8-point lead into the locker room. Nation made the final two field goals of the half for The Abbey.
  • A 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter gave the Crusaders a 13-point lead and enough cushion to secure the victory.
  • Belmont Abbey's largest lead in the fourth quarter was 15 points, the final margin.
  • The Crusaders forced 20 turnovers and had nine steals with Catherine Hendershott recording three steals.
  • The Abbey also had 17 assists compared to 13 for the Wasps.
  • The Crusaders outrebounded Emory & Henry 33-30 with 16 offensive rebounds. 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders are on the road for their next five contests starting Wednesday at Limestone at 7:30 p.m.
  • Belmont Abbey's next home game will be December 2 against Barton at 2 p.m. in the Wheeler Center in the Conference Carolinas opener.
