HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team closed out the regular season with a good result thanks to a 2-0 win over Coker Saturday in South Atlantic Conference play.
With the win, the Crusaders clinched the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament that begins Tuesday. Belmont Abbey held a 1-0 lead for most of the game before scoring in the final two minutes to seal the win. Additionally,
Chloe Parker recorded her fourth shutout of the season and made nine saves in goal.
Belmont Abbey improved to 7-9 overall and 7-7 in league play. Coker closes its season with a 3-14 overall record and 2-12 league mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders struck first just over 3:30 into the game with a goal from Sarah Schumacher via a Casey Etter assist on a penalty corner.
- Belmont Abbey took five shots in the first quarter before the Cobras recorded a shot in the second quarter.
- Parker made five of her nine saves in the second quarter against the Coker offensive attack.
- Belmont Abbey outshot Coker 18-14 and both teams had nine shots on goals.
- The Crusaders had 10 penalty corners compared to four for the Cobras.
- Alexis Harris closed the match out with her first career goal with less than a minute remaining the contest.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey advances to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament and will face No. 4 seed Lander at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Newberry, South Carolina.
- This is the second straight year that the Crusaders and Bearcats will face each other in the opening round.
- The winner would advance to play No. 1 seed Mount Olive at 2 p.m. next Friday.
