NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team saw the 2023 season come to an end in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Tuesday at Setzler Field.
The No. 5 seed Crusaders were locked in a close battle with No. 4 seed Lander but it was the Bearcats who came away with the 1-0 victory. It was the second straight year that Belmont Abbey and Lander had faced each other in the opening round of the conference tournament.
Belmont Abbey closes the season with a 7-10 overall record. Lander is now 11-6 and advances to face No. 1 seed Mount Olive Friday in the semifinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders held up defensively in the first quarter after having to defend five penalty corners.
- Lander scored the only goal of the game early in the second quarter.
- Jessica Rybicki took the only shot on goal for the Crusaders in the second quarter.
- Belmont Abbey's lone penalty corner came in the second quarter as well.
- Chloe Parker finished with seven saves against the Bearcats, including five in the first half.
