Crusaders Celebrate Senior Day With Upset of Newberry

CLOVER, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team sent its senior class off with a victory as the Crusaders upset No. 10 Newberry 4-2 Friday afternoon at Field Day Park.
 
The Abbey earned its first win in program history over a Top 10 team and also clinched a spot in the South Atlantic Conference tournament. Additionally, Chloe Parker officially tied the school record for most saves in program history with 239.
 
Prior to the game, seven seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony. They include: Hailey Boda, Layne Diffley, Emily Hughes, Abigail Kane, Kirsten Rafferty, Alexandra Yancey and Analeigh Page were honored.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hailey Boda made her first start in goal for The Abbey and made one save in the first quarter.
  • Newberry got on the board just over five minutes into the game off of a penalty corner.
  • The Crusaders pulled even with 3:40 left in the first quarter with a Jessica Rybicki goal.
  • It is the second goal in as many games for Rybicki and Casey Etter was credited with the assist.
  • Cuinn Deely put the Crusaders ahead just over six minutes into the second quarter off a Jillian Cain assist. It was the first goal of the season for the sophomore.
  • Marie Camastro extended The Abbey lead with her first career goal in the third quarter.
  • The Wolves responded with a goal off a penalty stroke in the quarter.
  • Parker's save came early in the fourth quarter to preserve The Abbey lead.
  • Deely added her second goal of the game with 1:22 remaining off an assist from Alexis Harris to seal the victory.
  • Belmont Abbey outshot Newberry 11-10. In addition, the Crusaders finished with a season-high 10 shots on goal.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with six penalty corners for the game.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey heads on the road for its final two games of the regular season starting Tuesday at Limestone at 7 p.m.
  • The Crusaders end the regular season at Coker at noon next Saturday.
