HARTWELL, GA. and GREER, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's golf team opened play at a pair of tournaments Monday. The Crusaders sent one team to compete at the Cateechee Fall Invitational in Georgia with two teams taking part at the Fall Upstate Invitational in South Carolina.
 
At the Cateechee Fall Invitational, the Crusaders were tied for 16th following the first round of the tournament. Belmont Abbey, along with the rest of the field, had two holes to complete from the second round as it was suspended due to darkness at Cateechee Golf Club.
 
Based on scores available, Nick Norman and Lee Carew were the only Crusaders to complete both rounds. Norman finished with a 1-over par total after rounds of 4-over par 75 and 3-under par 68. Carew was 1-under for the tournament after rounds of 71 (Even) and 1-under 70.
 
Jacob Ferrari also shot even par in his first round while Will Locey and Connor Rose both shot 4-over par through the first 18 holes. The second round will be completed Tuesday morning before the final round begins.
 
Belmont Abbey shot a 292 (+8) through the first completed round and was tied with Limestone for 16th in the team standings.
 
At the Upstate Invitational, Sam Newton led the way for the first of two Crusader teams after shooting a 1-under par 69 at Greer Country Club. Newton helped set the pace for the Belmont Abbey 'B' team who shot 282 (+2) as a team and is two shots back of host North Greenville 'A'.
 
Newton is tied for fifth and is two shots back of the lead. Elian Infante and Brodie Perry shot rounds of even par 70 with Eduardo Arango shooting 73 on the first Crusader team.
 
In his collegiate debut, Dominic Matteoni led the second team with a 1-over 71 for the Crusaders. Harvey Sladden and Brandon Spinks finished with rounds of 76 while Drew Nicholson shot 79 to give Belmont Abbey C a team score of 302, which is in seventh place.
