Crusaders Earn Crucial Shootout Win At Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team earned a crucial victory on the road thanks to a 3-2 shootout win over Converse Tuesday at Weisiger Stadium.  
 
Abigail Kane was the only one to convert during the shootout for the Crusaders as the team defeated the Valkyries for the second time this season. Chloe Parker made three saves in 80 minutes and stopped all five Converse attempts in the shootout.
 
With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 5-8 overall and 5-6 in South Atlantic Conference play. Converse is now 6-8 overall and 4-7 in league play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Analeigh Page made her first start of the season for Belmont Abbey.
  • The Crusaders got on the board with 7:39 left in the first quarter on a goal from Casey Etter and an Abigail Kane assist.
  • The Valkyries pulled even with just under five minutes left before halftime.
  • Converse went ahead early in the second half off a goal before The Abbey responded with the tying goal from Jessica Rybicki past the midway point of the third quarter.
  • Jillian Cain was credited with the assist off of Rybicki's goal.
  • Two of three Parker's saves came in the second overtime period. She is now one save away and two from setting a new program record for most saves in a career.
  • Belmont Abbey had eight shots on the night and three on goal compared to 10 and five from Converse, respectively.
  • The Crusaders held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders host No. 10 Newberry at 2 p.m. Friday at Field Day Park in the regular season home finale.
  • Seven student-athletes will be recognized in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of the contest.
