Aguilar Delivers Game-Winner To Complete Abbey Rally

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Jorge Aguilar scored his first career-game winning goal as the Belmont Abbey men's soccer team rallied from a second-half deficit to earn a 2-1 win over Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas play Wednesday evening at Tate Field.
 
Aguilar tallied his third goal of the season with just over nine minutes left in the second half to complete the Crusaders' comeback and earn a regular-season sweep over the Bobcats. The win is the second straight victory in three days for the Crusaders, who have won five of their last six matches.
 
Belmont Abbey improved to 7-4-1 overall and 5-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Lees-McRae is 3-5-3 overall and 3-3-1 following Wednesday's result.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey took four shots in the first half led by a pair from Felipe Baptista.
  • The Bobcats got on the board in the 55th minute with a goal from Owen Smith.
  • The Crusaders pulled even less than three minutes later when Davis McBee tallied his third goal of the season by scoring off a free kick.
  • Belmont Abbey got the go-ahead goal off when Aguilar secured a loose ball in the box and fired a shot from the left side into the back right corner.
  • Aguilar and McBee matched Alexander Ljusberg with their third goals of the season. 
  • The Crusaders withstood a seven-shot half from the Bobcats to stay in the match and secure the victory.
  • Lees-McRae held a 9-8 advantage in shots over Belmont Abbey with both teams taking three shots on goal.
  • Will Whitman made two saves in goal for Crusaders.
