BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team earned its 10th straight victory with a 66-55 victory over Chowan in Conference Carolinas action Monday evening at the Wheeler Center.
It is the fourth time in the last four seasons that the Crusaders have had a winning streak of 10 or more games.
The Crusaders were led by a career-best performance from
Abigail Crain, finishing with a career high 30 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also finished with two assists and a blocked shot.
Taylor Stelley also finished in double figures with 15 points as the Crusaders moved to 12-3 overall and 9-0 in the conference. Stelley has scored in double figures for the 12th time in 14 games.
Chowan is now 10-6 and 6-4 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got off to a fast start with a 9-0 run that was sparked by a pair of 3-pointers from Stelley.
- Belmont Abbey shot 61.5 percent from the field in the first quarter and scored 26 points in the period, a new season-best in the opening quarter. Crain scored 13 points in the first 10 minutes.
- The Abbey did not trail for the entire game with its biggest lead at 14 points.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 14 assists, which is the 11th time this season the Crusaders have finished with double digits in that category.
- Eight of the nine Crusaders who saw playing time recorded at least one assist.
- After leading by four at halftime, Belmont Abbey shot 58.3 percent from the field in the third quarter to extend the lead to eight entering the fourth quarter.
- The Crusaders closed the game defensively by holding Chowan scoreless over a 5:34 stretch going back into the third quarter.
- The Abbey held the Hawks to two made field goals in the final quarter.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
- Prior to Monday's contest, Belmont Abbey remained No. 5 in the latest D2SIDA Southeast Regional rankings.
- It is the third straight week that the Crusaders are in the Top 5 in the region.
