WILSON, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team earned its ninth straight win and remained unbeaten in Conference Carolinas play thanks to a 50-40 victory over Barton Saturday at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Crusaders put together another strong defensive effort by holding the Bulldogs to 20 percent shooting for the game. Additionally, the Abbey held Barton to just one field goal in the fourth quarter to help pull away for the win.
Cate Schieber led the way for Belmont Abbey with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. She also had six rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Taylor Stelley had 11 points for the Crusaders while
Catherine Hendershott added 10 points.
Belmont Abbey is now 11-3 overall and 8-0 in conference play. Barton is now 2-12 overall, 2-5 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ricky Lesenyego made two layups for the Crusaders in the first quarter to help the team get started offensively.
- Belmont Abbey controlled the glass in the first 10 minutes by out-rebounding Barton 16-5 in the first 10 minutes.
- The second quarter was a defensive struggle with the two teams accounting for just 14 points in the period.
- Belmont Abbey used an 8-2 in the third quarter to take an eight-point lead. Belmont Abbey eventually led 37-35 entering the fourth quarter.
- The Crusaders outscored the Bulldogs 7-2 in the final 3:05 with five free throws to help seal the game.
- Saturday's game marked the sixth time this season that Belmont Abbey has held its opponent to 45 points or fewer this season.
- Belmont Abbey entered the game ranked in Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 53.8 points per game.
- The Crusaders finished with a season-high 49 rebounds.
- Abigail Crain had seven points and a team-best 10 rebounds. It is the second straight game that Crain has finished with a double-digit rebounding total.
