WILSON, N.C --
Mario Lacy, Jr. tallied 17 points and topped 1,000 points for his career, but a free throw with 12 seconds remaining was the difference in a 71-70 Barton win over Belmont Abbey Saturday afternoon. Donaven Hairston hit the second of two free throws to break a 70-70 tie, capping a late Bulldog rally over the final four minutes.
The result was just the second loss in 12 games for the Crusaders (10-6, 6-2), who also saw a six-game winning streak snapped. Barton maintains its hold on first-place in Conference Carolinas with a 10-5, 7-0 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lacy's 17 points came on eight-of-nine shooting from the field, while he also added 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
- Lacy finished the game with 1,002 career points at the collegiate level. He has 714 points in 67 games at The Abbey and 288 as a freshman at Urbana (Ohio).
- Wade Jackson and Mason Taylor added 13 points each.
- The Crusaders were up seven, 66-59 with 3:39 to play before Barton scored eight straight points to grab the lead with 1:22 to play.
- Belmont Abbey held a 42-41 rebounding advantage, but had four more turnovers.
- The Crusaders also outshot the Bulldogs 42.9 percent to 40.6 percent from the field.
