BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team took a break from conference play with an afternoon match against Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday at Alumni Field. The Crusaders battled back and forth with the Bears before Lenoir-Rhyne went ahead in the final 10 minutes of the match to come away with a 2-1 win over The Abbey.
The match was highlighted by the first career goal by
Alyssa Espinosa in the second half.
Belmont Abbey is now 4-4-2 overall on the season while Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 5-2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mia Muckenthaler took the first shot of the match for Belmont Abbey 10 minutes into the match.
- Lenoir-Rhyne's Kara Gavaghan scored in the 18th minute to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
- Lauryn Harding made five saves in the first half. She finished with seven to match a season-high dating back to the Sept. 10 match against North Greenville.
- Belmont Abbey and Lenoir-Rhyne each finished with five corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
- Alyssa Espinosa scored in the 78th minute to pull the Crusaders even at 1-1 off an assist from Logan Parry. It was Parry's second assist of the year as well.
- The Bears re-captured the lead in the 81st minute with a goal by Nicole Auger.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 11 shots, four of them on goal. The Crusaders have finished in double figures with shots in all but one match this season.
