BELMONT, N.C. – A pair of second half goals proved to be the difference for the Belmont Abbey women's soccer team as the Crusaders came away with a 3-2 victory over Chowan in a Conference Carolinas match Wednesday at Alumni Field.
Belmont Abbey (5-4-2 overall, 4-1-1 Conference Carolinas) earned its first home victory of the season by taking an early lead and then taking control of the match in the second half. Chowan is now 3-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey was on the offensive attack early and earned a penalty kick in the 13th minute of the match.
- The Crusaders got on the board first thanks to a header by Goose Andrews in the 23rd minute off an assist by Anna Richard. It was the fourth goal of the season for Andrews and third assist for Richard.
- The Hawks found the equalizer three minutes later to pull even at 1-1.
- The Crusaders scored the next two goals within 2:30 of game time.
- The first goal came off a free kick by Sabrina Cunha in the 55th minute to give The Abbey a 2-1 lead. It was the first career goal for Cunha.
- Paige D'Agostin extended the lead to 3-1 with a long-range goal in the 57th minute.
- Chowan pulled within 3-2 with a goal in the 82nd minute but the Crusaders were able to hold defensively to earn the win.
- Belmont Abbey outshot Chowan 15-8 in shots, 8-4 in shots on target.
- Lauryn Harding made five saves in goal for the Crusaders.

- The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team faces a trio of key matches within the next eight days.
- The Crusaders begin with a road match at UNC Pembroke at 2 p.m. Saturday followed by a home match against Mount Olive at 4:30 p.m. October 11.
- The three-game stretch concludes with a contest against Francis Marion at 3:30 p.m. October 13 at Alumni Field. The match was rescheduled following Hurricane Ian.
