WINGATE, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 1-0 victory over Wingate Wednesday evening at Graham Gill Field.
Meadoe Harrell-Alvarez scored the game's only goal with 1:52 remaining in the game to give the Crusaders the late victory off an assist from
Kaylee Wenzel.
Belmont Abbey is now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. Wingate is now 0-4, 0-2 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders had several chances to score in the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs 10-1 in the first half.
- Casey Etter had one of the early shots on goal for Belmont Abbey. She finished with a game-best five shots and three shots on goal.
- Belmont Abbey was able to draw a season-high 11 penalty corners for the game.
- Wenzel earned an assist for the second straight game.
- Chloe Parker earned her second shutout of the season and recorded four saves in the win. It is the 10th of her career, which is a school record dating back to last season.
- Belmont Abbey held a 14-7 advantage in shots as well as 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
