Abbey, NGU Finish With 2-2 Draw in Frantic Final Minutes

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team played its second straight Conference Carolinas home match against North Greenville Saturday at Alumni Field.
 
The two teams combined to score three goals in the final 8:47 of the match and walked away with a 2-2 draw as a result.
 
Belmont Abbey finished with its second straight draw to begin conference play and are 1-3-2 overall. Saturday's contest was the first conference match for North Greenville, who moved to 2-2-1 overall.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams played a scoreless first 45 minutes with North Greenville and Belmont Abbey accounting for 4 and 3 shots, respectively.
North Greenville struck first with a penalty kick in the 55th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Belmont Abbey created several chances to score in the second half by taking 12 shots in the final 45 minutes.
Tyler Stopford scored his first goal of the season off a header in the 82nd minute to pull even at 1-1. Nathan Diemling was credited with his second career assist on the play.
Zion Duncan scored his third goal of the season with a strike in the 88th minute to give The Abbey a 2-1 lead.
North Greenville had its equalizer with 34 seconds remaining in the match.
Mackenzie Toms and Jorge Aguilar led Belmont Abbe with three shots each.
Kendall Ward made his first career appearance with the varsity team in Saturday's match.

Belmont Abbey plays its first conference road match against Barton at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Wilson.
The Crusaders return home for a nonconference match against Lenoir-Rhyne Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
