BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team closed out its home schedule by earning a series victory in a doubleheader against Erskine Saturday at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders rallied to win Game 1 4-3 before falling 14-7 in Game 2.
Prior to Saturday's doubleheader, 15 seniors were honored during a pregame ceremony on Senior Day.
Belmont Abbey moved to 25-14 overall and 15-8 in Conference Carolinas play. Erskine is now 22-17 overall, 12-12 in the league.
GAME 1
- The Crusaders led off the bottom of the first inning with consecutive walks as part of eight drawn during Game 1.
- After falling behind 1-0 early, Belmont Abbey pulled even in the bottom of the third inning with a sacrifice fly from Ben Gobbel to bring in Adam Overcash. Overcash led the fream off with a single.
- Evan Campbell recorded six outs in relief for the Crusaders, including four straight starting from the top of the fifth inning.
- The seventh-inning rally started when pinch-hitter Carter DuHaime drew a walk. Brady Emerson came in to run and scored on an RBI double from Overcash.
- Sean Johnson scored the tying run thanks to a sacrifice fly from Ben Ferguson.
- After Gobbel and Kale Rhame were intentionally walked, Zach Aehlert hit a walk-off single to left field to bring in Overcash as the winning run.
- Jake Craddock earned his second win of the season on the mound.
GAME 2
- The Crusaders got off to a good start in the nightcap when Gobbel drove in the first run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first inning.
- Gobbel added an RBI double in the third and was followed by an RBI groundout from Rhame to make it 3-0 in favor of Belmont Abbey.
- Overcash hit his second sacrifice fly of the day in the fourth inning to cut the deficit down to 6-4.
- Gobbel hit his third home run of the weekend with a leadoff home run in the fifth.
- Ben Ferguson added an RBI single in the sixth inning and the final run for the Crusaders came in the eighth when Patrick Taylor scored on a wild pitch.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders head on the road to face Wingate at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
- It will be the second meeting of the season and it is the final game before Easter break.
