WINGATE, N.C. – Adam Overcash recorded hits in his first three-at bats to lead the Belmont Abbey baseball team against defending national champion Wingate Tuesday night at Ron Christopher Stadium.
One of those was a home run in the top of the first inning but it was the Bulldogs who ended up with the 10-5 victory Tuesday. The game marked the first of 10 straight road games to close the regular season for the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey moved to 25-15 overall on the season while Wingate is now 34-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Overcash got the evening started strong for the Crusaders with a home run to right field to give Belmont Abbey an early 1-0 lead.
- After Wingate had tied the game in the bottom of the first, Overcash gave Belmont Abbey the lead back again with an RBI single in the third to make it 2-1.
- Brennan Martin scored on the play after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Sean Johnson followed with a single two batters later.
- The Crusaders pushed the lead to 5-1 thanks to a three-run home run from Ben Ferguson, his 12th of the year. Ferguson is now tied for the team lead in home runs with Johnson.
- Avery Short made the most of his first start of the season, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out three in five innings of work.
- Nick Mauer and Ben Gobbel had the other two hits of the game for the Crusaders with singles in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively.
- Scotty Reeves made his second start of the season at second base for Belmont Abbey in Tuesday's contest.

- The Crusaders are off for a week due to Easter Break and will return to action with a game at Anderson University April 19 in Anderson S.C.
