BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team used eight extra-base hits and a breakthrough eighth inning to earn a 15-6 win over Erskine in the first game of a three-game Conference Carolinas series Friday at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders hit five home runs, including two each from
Patrick Taylor and
Ben Gobbel, as well as
Ben Ferguson. Taylor's home runs were also the first of his career.
Kale Rhame also had a two-hit day as part of the 13 hits for the day for The Abbey.
Belmont Abbey improved to 24-13 overall and 14-7 in the league with the win. The Flying Fleet are now 21-16, 11-11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Erskine took a 3-0 lead in the first inning but Belmont Abbey took the lead over in the second inning with five runs in the frame starting with a leadoff home run from Gobbel.
- Rhame and Zach Aehlert followed that up with back-to-back doubles and both scored two batters later off an Erskine fielding error to pull even at 3-3.
- That set the stage for Taylor's first career home run to make it 5-3 in favor of the Crusaders.
- The Flying Fleet took a 6-5 lead in the top of the third but The Abbey pulled even in the bottom of the fourth with Taylor's second home run of the game.
- Ferguson put the Crusaders ahead for good at 7-6 in the fifth inning with a leadoff home run. He drove in another run with an RBI single in the seventh inning to make it 8-6.
- Jason White did not allow a run in his final three innings to earn his seventh win of the season. He finished with five strikeouts in six innings.
- Avery Short pitched two scoreless innings to hold the lead for Belmont Abbey, including striking out a potential tying run at the plate to end the eighth inning.
- The Crusaders broke the game open with a seven-run eighth inning starting with Taylor drawing a walk with the bases loaded and a Sean Johnson RBI single.
- Martin scored later on a wild pitch and the scoring was capped off with a grand slam by Gobbel.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey concludes its series with Erskine with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at Abbey Yard. It is the final home date of the 2022 season for the Crusaders.
- Sixteen seniors will be honored prior to the start of the doubleheader.
