BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team used a big night offensively to pull away for a 12-5 victory over Lander in a nonconference game Wednesday at Abbey Yard.
The game had been pushed back from Tuesday due to inclement weather.
Sean Johnson and
Adam Overcash led the way offensively for the Crusaders, finishing with four hits each.
Ben Gobbel also drove in four runs. The Crusaders finished the game with 15 hits.
Belmont Abbey moved to 23-13 overall with the win. Lander is now 18-17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an sacrifice fly from Ben Gobbel.
- After the Bearcats tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning, Gobbel's single turned into a 3-1 lead when a run came to score off an error.
- Lander took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning but Ben Ferguson gave The Abbey the lead for good with a three-run home run to make it 6-4.
- Belmont Abbey three more runs in the sixth inning with RBI singles from Johnson and Overcash. In between those plays, Patrick Taylor scored a run off a wild pitch.
- The Crusaders got three more runs over the span of the final two innings starting with an RBI singles from Brennan Martin in the seventh.
- Gobbel added an RBI groundout to his total while Zach Aehlert drove in the final run with an RBI single in the eighth inning.
- Ethan Wilson recorded four straight outs between the fourth and fifth innings to earn his first victory of the season.
