MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Luke Thierfelder broke his own school record in the javelin to win the event and qualify for selection to the NCAA Division II Championship, highlighting the opening day of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Thierfelder, a freshman, posted a mark of 58.69m (192'-6") of his fifth of six throws to best his previous mark of 58.00m at the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears Invitational on April 8. By surpassing the qualifying mark of 58.38m, he is now in the pool for selection to an at-large berth in the NCAA Division II National Championship next month.

Senior Sam Lynch also broke his own school record in the 10,000 meters in the last event of the day on Friday night. He ran a time of 32:04.70, more than 34 seconds faster than his previous best.

As a team, Belmont Abbey stands fourth with 17 points. Eight runners will compete in finals tomorrow with three field events (discus, pole vault, shot put) and the relays being contested.
