Crusaders Complete Saturday Sweep of Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team scored a combined 28 runs over two games and it was enough for the team to complete a doubleheader sweep of Southern Wesleyan Saturday at Dr. C Keith Connor Field.
 
The Crusaders won the first game 13-3 and followed that up with a 15-5 win in the nightcap over the Warriors.
 
Combined with Friday's win, it is the third sweep in Conference Carolinas play the Crusaders have earned this season.
 
Belmont Abbey also reached the 30-win mark for the first time since the 2018 season and are now 30-15 overall on the season and 18-8 in conference play. Southern Wesleyan is 10-36 overall and 2-25 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • The Crusaders started the game off strong with a leadoff triple from Sean Johnson. Johnson came in to score on an RBI groundout by Adam Overcash.
  • Belmont Abbey extended the lead to 4-0 entering the bottom of the third inning thanks to a sol home run from Connor Tucker in the second and a two-run homer by Overcash the next inning.
  • After the Warriors responded with two runs in the third, the Crusaders responded with three runs in the fourth and broke it open with a five-spot in the fifth inning.
  • Brennan Martin and Johnson had a two-run single and and RBI double, respectively in the fourth. Johnson also added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
  • Gobbel added a home run in the fifth that was followed by a walk by Patrick Taylor with the bases loaded.
  • Adam Overcash closed the scoring in the fifth with a three-run home run.
  • Carter DuHaime also homered in the sixth.
  • Alex Sniffen earned the win after pitching six innings and allowing two runs and recording three strikeouts.
 
GAME 2
  • Belmont Abbey got off to a fast start in the first inning by putting up six runs while sending 11 batters to the plate in the frame.
  • Ben Gobbel drove in three runs through the first three innings to help The Abbey build a 10-2 lead after three innings. He added a fourth run batted in with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
  • Zach Aehlert hit two home runs in the game (third and eighth innings) for his first multi-home run day of the season.
  • Ethan Wilson earned the win after pitching three innings of relief.
  • Brady Emerson and Jackson Risk drove in the final three runs of the game in the ninth inning with RBI singles. Emerson drove in one run while Risk brought in a pair.
  • Seven of the nine starters for Belmont Abbey had two hits each in the second contest.

UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders play their final nonconference game at Lander at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Greenwood, South Carolina.
  • Belmont Abbey defeated Lander 12-5 back on April 6 in the first meeting at Abbey Yard.
  • The team closes out conference play next weekend with a series at Chowan beginning at 3 p.m. Friday.
