CENTRAL, S.C. – It took extra innings to decide the series opener between the Belmont Abbey baseball team and Southern Wesleyan Friday night at Dr. C. Keith Connor Field. Ultimately, a three-run 10th inning proved to be the difference as the Crusaders held on for a 13-10 win over the Warriors.
Ben Ferguson hit a two-run double to break up the 10-10 tie while
Nick Mauer added a pinch-hit RBI single to add an insurance run for the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey is now 28-15 overall and 16-8 in Conference Carolinas play. Southern Wesleyan is now 10-34 and 2-23 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders fell behind 2-0 entering the top of the fourth inning but took its first lead of the night thanks to a three-run home run from Connor Tucker.
- The lead changed hands again in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Crusaders regained it with a four-run fifth inning.
- Sean Johnson started the scoring with a home run to left field to cut the deficit down to 5-4.
- Ben Gobbel's RBI single three batters later tied the game at 5-5 that was followed by a Kale Rhame single to give the Crusaders a 6-5 advantage.
- Gobbel extended the lead to 9-5 thanks to a two-run home run in the seventh inning. He led the team with three hits on the day.
- Trailing 10-9 entering the ninth inning, the Crusaders pulled even again thanks to a sacrifice fly from Gobbel to bring in Adam Overcash. Overcash led the inning off reaching second base on an error.
- The Crusaders kept the tie in tact in the ninth when Adam Overcash threw out the Southern Wesleyan base runner at home plate that represented the winning run.
- Belmont native Jackson Risk made the tag on the play in his first career start at catcher.
- Risk and Patrick Taylor got the extra inning started with consecutive singles. Taylor had two hits on the day along with Tucker, Rhame and Zach Aehlert.
- That set the stage for Ferguson's double with two outs to score both runners.
- Nick Mauer delivered a pinch hit single two batters later to drive in Ferguson.
- Avery Short earned the win after pitching the final three innings of relief. He did not allow an earned run and gave up just two hits to move to 4-0 on the season.
