SALISBURY, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned its second straight road win in as many days with the latest triumph coming in a 4-2 victory over Catawba Wednesday at Newman Park.
Belmont Abbey had a pair of home runs in the game from
Ben Ferguson and
Zach Aehlert and the Crusaders were able to hold off a late rally by the Indians in the ninth inning to secure the win.
The Crusaders moved to 27-15 overall on the season while the Indians are now 25-21.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grant Lohmeier made his first start since Feb. 22 against Limestone and kept Catawba scoreless through the first three innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.
- The Crusaders broke the scoreless stalemate in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a three-run home run from Ben Ferguson. The homer gave Ferguson the team lead with 13 on the season.
- Gobbel followed the Ferguson home run with his first triple of the season.
- Zach Aehlert extended the lead to 4-0 for The Abbey in the sixth inning with a home run on the first pitch of the inning.
- Nic Aehlert had his longest appearance of the season with four innings of work. He earned his first win of the season and finished with two runs allowed and striking out four batters.
- Ethan Wilson pitched a scoreless eighth inning to keep the lead at 4-2.
- Evan Campbell earned his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
- Sean Johnson reached base four times with a hit while also drawing three walks. He also finished with three stolen bases on the evening.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey resumes Conference Carolinas play with a three game series at Southern Wesleyan beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
- That series will conclude with a doubleheader Saturday.
