Crusaders Return From Break With Road Win at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned from Easter break on a good note with a 10-6 victory over Anderson Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. Belmont Abbey got off to a fast start by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and leading 5-1 after three innings.
 
Ben Gobbel led the way for the Crusaders with three hits and driving in four runs.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 26-15 on the season while Anderson is 21-21.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sean Johnson and Adam Overcash led the game off with a single and double in the top of the first inning.
  • Johnson scored on an RBI single from Gobbel while Overcash scored on a sacrifice fly by Kale Rhame.
  • The Crusaders added another run in the second inning when Connor Tucker scored on a fielding error by the Trojans.
  • An RBI double by Zach Aehlert and a sacrifice fly from Tucker extended the Crusaders lead to 5-0 entering the bottom of the third inning.
  • Gobbel extended the Belmont Abbey lead to 6-1 with a solo home run in the fifth.
  • After the Trojans got back within 6-4, Belmont Abbey pulled away in the sixth inning with a four-run frame.
  • Ben Ferguson drove in two runs with an RBI double while Gobbel drove in two more runs with a single to right field.
  • Overcash and Johnson had two hits each as well for The Abbey.
  • Avery Short started his second straight game for the Crusaders. He struck out six over 4.2 innings.
  • Jason White was strong in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out six while allowing just one hit.
  • Alex Sniffen closed out the game with three strikeouts in the ninth inning.
  • The 15 strikeouts is a single-game best for the Belmont Abbey pitching staff.
 
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey faces a quick turnaround to face Catawba at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Newman Park in Salisbury.
  • This is the second meeting of the season between the Indians and the Crusaders.
