Abbey Battles Coker in Extra Innings

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team played its first extra innings contest of the season against Coker Tuesday at Tom J. New Field.
 
The Crusaders had an early lead but it was the Cobras who came away with a 4-3 victory in 11 innings Tuesday.
 
Belmont Abbey moves to 14-6 overall while Coker is now 7-14.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders took a 2-0 in the top of the second inning thanks to a two-run home run from Brennan Martin. It was his third of the season and also scored Adam Overcash, who led the inning off with a single.
  • Connor Tucker was the next batter to reach safely on a throwing error by Coker.
  • After a Kale Rhame single, Tucker scored two batters later when Patrick Taylor reached first base on another Cobras error to make it 3-0 in favor of Belmont Abbey.
  • Nic Aehlert made his second start of the season for The Abbey and allowed three hits and a strikeout in three shutout innings.
  • Rhame led the Crusaders with two hits on the day, including his fourth double of the season in the seventh inning.
  • Avery Short was able to work his way out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning by retiring three batters in a row with runners on first and second base.
  • Zach Aehlert also had two hits on the day for The Abbey, including a single in the 11th inning.
  • Tuesday's contest was the first extra-inning game for the Crusaders since a 4-3 victory in 10 innings over Mount Olive on April 30, 2021 in the Conference Carolinas Tournament.  
 
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey is scheduled to host Anderson in another midweek contest at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Abbey Yard.
