BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team wrapped up its three-game series against UNC Pembroke with a doubleheader Saturday at Abbey Yard.
Three Crusaders finished with three hits for the day but it was the Braves who earned a doubleheader sweep, winning 11-8 in Game 1 followed by a 17-5 victory in Game 2.
Belmont Abbey moved to 20-11 overall, 11-6 in Conference Carolinas play. UNC Pembroke is 21-8, 13-2 in the league.
GAME 1
- Kale Rhame recorded the first of his five hits on the day with a leadoff single in the second inning.
- Sean Johnson's one-out single in the third inning extended his hitting streak to eight games.
- After falling behind 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Rhame pulled The Abbey even with a three-run home run to right field.
- The Crusaders attempted to rally in the fifth inning starting with an RBI on a fielder's choice by Gobbel to score Patrick Taylor.
- Belmont Abbey's best inning of the day came in the bottom of the sixth inning when they brought four runs across.
- Zach Aehlert led off with a home run to left field that was later followed by an RBI double from Johnson and an RBI single by Adam Overcash.
- Rhame walked with the bases loaded to bring another run.
GAME 2
- Belmont Abbey got off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run home run from Ben Ferguson to make it 2-0.
- After the Braves pulled even in the top of the second, the Crusaders re-captured the lead thanks to an RBI groundout from Taylor.
- Belmont Abbey added a run in the fifth inning with an RBI groundout from Rhame followed by an RBI single from Overcash in the sixth inning.
- Connor Tucker finished with two hits on the day for The Abbey.
HONORED
- Belmont Abbey head baseball coach Chris Anderson was honored prior to the first pitch of the doubleheader Saturday for becoming the all-time wins leader in Belmont Abbey baseball history.
- He surpassed the mark with his 229th win at Francis Marion Feb. 19. Anderson currently has 240 wins as the leader of the Crusaders program.

- The Crusaders face Queens for the second time this season in a road contest at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Tuckaseegee Dream Fields in Charlotte.
