ASHLAND, Va. -- Belmont Abbey stepped out of conference play on Saturday and picked up a pair of victories at the Randolph-Macon tri-match. The Crusaders swept Rutgers-Newark -- the No. 8-ranked team in Division III -- 28-26, 25-20, 25-12 before taking a 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 26-28, 15-11) win over the hosts.
With the wins, The Abbey improves to 11-8.
THE OPENER
- Andrew Kohut tallied nine kills and hit .400. He added a team-high four digs, an ace and two blocks.
- Kyle Ferguson was perfect on six attempts (six kills), while Matteo Miselli added five kills.
- Jack Walsh tallied 29 kills, while chipping in one kill and two block solos.
- The Crusaders hit .383 as a team (36k-13e-60a). The Scarlet Raiders (17-3) connected at a .105 clip.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Miselli registered 18 kills, while adding a career-high six blocks. He also had six digs and two aces.
- Jake Somers added a season-high eight kills.
- Walsh was credited with 46 assists, while Daniel Cerqua led the defensive effort with nine digs.
- Kohut tallied seven digs and seven kills.
