BELMONT, N.C. -
Brady Smith won 11 of his 17 faceoffs and the Belmont Abbey Men's Lacrosse team held off Barton 9-8 this afternoon. With the win, The Abbey improves to 3-4 on the season, while Barton dips to 5-4. It was the conference opener for both teams. The Crusaders have now won three straight games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Matthew Wyatt set up Erik Sahlgren for a goal, then scored a man-up goal of his own to put The Abbey in front 2-0 early. Later in the quarter, he assisted Connor Toomey on a goal, and BAC led 6-1 at the end of the opening period
- Barton scored four in the second, before Bailey Williams found the back of the net to make it a 7-5 Crusader lead at halftime
- The third quarter was a defensive battle, with only one goal scored, and just 12 combined shots on goal. BAC led 7-6 heading into the final period
- In the fourth, it was Austin Hasen scoring early in the quarter, and then scoring again with 1:19 left to give The Abbey the 9-8 victory
- On the day, Hasen led the goal scoring with three, while Wyatt scored a goal and handed out four assists
- Smith won 11 of his 17 faceoffs and picked up a game-high nine ground balls
- Thomas Sullivan made 19 saves in goal
