BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team completed its second straight Conference Carolinas home sweep in convincing fashion over Barton Saturday at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 9-8 victory in Game 1 and followed that up with a 21-5 victory over the Bulldogs to complete the three-game sweep.
Sean Johnson led the way for The Abbey with a day to remember, finishing with four home runs, seven hits total and driving in 10 runs over the course of the two games.
The sweep moved the Crusaders to 19-8 overall and 10-4 in Conference Carolinas play. Barton is now 13-13 overall and 8-7 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- Johnson recorded the first two hits of the contest for the Crusaders: a leadoff single in the first inning and a one-out double in the third.
- Trailing 2-0 entering the third inning, The Crusaders scored the first run of the contest in the bottom thanks to an RBI single from Overcash to make it 2-1.
- After falling 6-1 in the fourth inning, The Abbey began to rally thanks to a two-run home run from Connor Tucker. Kale Rhame had a one-out single in the previous at bat.
- Johnson's first home run of the day was a leadoff home run in the fifth to make it 6-4.
- Entering the sixth inning trailing 8-4, Rhame continued the rally for The Abbey by reaching on an error and later scoring on a wild pitch to make it 8-5.
- Belmont Abbey started the comeback in the seventh when Overcash hit a two-run home run in the seventh to make it 8-7.
- The next four batters reached safely for the Crusaders, concluding with a two-run single by Rhame to complete the comeback.
- Austin Hunter earned his first win of the season for The Abbey.
GAME 2
- The Crusaders picked up right where they left off in the first game scoring three runs thanks to RBI singles from Ben Gobbel and Zach Aehlert and a sacrifice fly by Kale Rhame.
- After Barton cut the lead down to 3-2 in the third inning, Gobbel added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 for the Crusaders.
- The breakthrough innings for The Abbey came in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring six runs in both frames.
- The innings were highlighted by a pair of home runs from Johnson: a grand slam in the fourth inning and a three-run shot in the fifth. Johnson homered for the third straight inning in the sixth, a two-run home run.
- Aehlert and Tucker had three hits each in the second game for the Crusaders while Ben Ferguson and Brennan Martin had two hits each.
- Martin capped the scoring for the Crusaders with a three-run home run in the seventh.
- Brendan Simonds matched his season-high total of 10 strikeouts over six innings pitch to earn his fourth victory of the season.
- Johnson's nine runs batted in are a new career high.
