BELMONT, N.C. – Adam Overcash's walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning proved to be the difference as the Belmont Abbey baseball team came away with a 4-3 victory over Limestone Tuesday at Abbey Yard.
The game was previously scheduled to be a road contest in Gaffney, S.C. before the game was moved due to field conditions at Limestone.
The Crusaders maintained their perfect start to the season and now sit at 5-0 overall. The Saints are now 0-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams scored a run in the first inning with the Crusaders' run coming on a Zach Aehlert RBI double to right-center field to drive in Sean Johnson.
- The Abbey erased a two-run deficit in the bottom of the third inning thanks to an RBI single from Carter DuHaime
- On the same play, Overcash came around to score the tying run after a Limestone throwing error.
- Brendan Simonds kept the Saints off the scoreboard in relief of Nic Aehlert starting in the third, allowing just two hits and recording eight strikeouts over five innings.
- Jason White entered the game in the eighth inning and kept the momentum going with a pair of scoreless innings.
- White also got a key defensive play in the top of the ninth inning when Zac Aehlert threw out a Limestone base runner for the final out of the frame. White earned the win to move him to 2-0 on the season.
- Ferguson got the bottom of the half of the ninth started by reaching second base on a Limestone fielding error.
- Overcash came through with the game-winning double just two batters later.
