Abbey Earns Saturday Split at King

BRISTOL, TENN. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a split of King in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Saturday. The Crusaders fell in Game 1 7-4 before bouncing back with a 6-0 victory in Game 2.
 
Adam Overcash finished the day with four runs batted in for The Abbey while Alex Sniffen and Brendan Simonds combined for a five-hit shutout.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference standings. King is 6-4 overall with an identical 3-2 league record.
 
GAME 1
  • Adam Overcash was the first Crusader to reach base with a one-out walk in the top of the second inning.
  • Ben Ferguson recorded the first hit of the game for The Abbey with a leadoff single in the fourth inning.
  • Overcash got Belmont Abbey on the board in the sixth inning with a three-run home run. It was his second home run of the season.
  • The final run of the contest for The Abbey came in the seventh inning when Nick Mauer scored on a fielder's choice. Mauer had a pinch-hit double earlier in the inning.
 
GAME 2
  • After a scoreless first three innings, Sean Johnson put the Crusaders in front 1-0 in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to left-center field.
  • The Abbey added to its lead three batters later when Zach Aehlert hit a two-run double to drive in Ferguson and Ben Gobbel.
  • Sniffen provided a boost on the mound for Belmont Abbey, pitching 5.2 innings while only allowing three hits and striking out six.
  • Simonds was able to work his way out of a jam in the seventh inning by retiring three batters in a row after allowing a single and double to start the inning.
  • The Crusaders added three more runs in the ninth inning to extend the lead starting with an RBI single by Gobbel to score Johnson. Johnson had led the frame off with a double.
  • Gobbel later scored on an RBI groundout Overcash.
  • Patrick Taylor capped the scoring with his RBI single during the next at-bat.
  • Simonds closed the game out over the final 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits while recording three strikeouts.
 
UP NEXT
  • Sunday's series finale has been postponed due to inclement weather.
  • The Crusaders return home to Abbey Yard to host Catawba at 5 p.m. March 1.
