Crusaders Compete Against Wingate

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team faced off against Wingate Tuesday at Abbey Yard in a battle of two of the top teams in the region.
 
Ben Ferguson hit his fourth home run of the season and three Crusaders recorded two hits each but it was the Bulldogs who came away with the 12-3 victory.
 
Belmont Abbey moved to 7-2 on the season while Wingate is now 8-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grant Lohmeier pitched two scoreless innings to begin the contest for The Abbey.
  • After the Bulldogs captured the lead in the top of the third inning, the Crusaders took it back with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
  • Ferguson got the Crusaders on the board with a solo home run to center field.
  • That was followed by an RBI double two batters later from Adam Overcash to drive in Zach Aehlert.
  • Connor Tucker led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single, one of his two hits for the game.
  • Overcash and Sean Johnson also recorded two hits each for the Crusaders.
  • Ben Gobbel drove in the final run of the game for The Abbey with a groundout in the seventh.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders open Conference Carolinas play with a three-game series against Francis Marion starting at 4 p.m. Friday in Florence, S.C.
  • The contest will mark the beginning of eight straight road contests for The Abbey.
  • The next home game for Belmont Abbey will March 1 against Catawba. The first pitch of that game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
