FLORENCE, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team opened Conference Carolinas play with a road contest against Francis Marion Friday. The Crusaders were locked in a close battle with the Patriots and it was Francis Marion who came away with a 1-0 victory in the ninth inning.
Jason White put together his longest start of the season, striking out four and allowing just four hits in 8.2 innings.
Belmont Abbey moved to 7-3 overall, 0-1 in league play. Francis Marion is now 6-1, 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jason White got The Abbey off to a strong start by retiring the first seven batters that he faced.
- The Crusaders finished with nine hits for the contest, including two each from Sean Johnson and Connor Tucker.
- Belmont Abbey's best chance to score came early in the second inning with a pair of singles from Adam Overcash and Carter DuHaime.
- Patrick Taylor and Connor Tucker were both able to record consecutive two-out singles in the fourth inning to give the Crusaders another chance.
- The Abbey tried to mount another scoring chance in the ninth inning starting with a leadoff double from Zach Aehlert.
- White was able to keep the Patriots out of scoring position for the first eight innings.
